“The founders of Welcome House and West Haven, the Steudel Family, had envisioned that persons with DD could live in group homes or family style homes that replicated as close as possible the kind of living that they were used to growing up.”

Scott

Scott is Welcome House’s resident health nut! He is always looking for healthy snacks, prefers playing basketball to watching television, and practices tai chi, karate and yoga in his spare time. Scott who has Down ’s syndrome, has lived at Welcome House’s House 3 in North Olmsted for two years. Previously Scott lived at home with his fraternal twin brother and his mother. Scott’s brother approached Welcome House looking for a supportive group home environment that would both meet Scott’s desire to be independent and his brother’s concern to find a place for Scott to live not just because his mother could no longer care for Scott but his brother wanted to plan for the inevitable time when his brother himself could no longer care for Scott. The transition has been so successful that Scott limits his visits to his brother’s house, eager to get home to House 3, his friends and his nightly bowl of ice cream –yes, even health nuts need an indulgence! Scott works at the Rocky River Adult Activity Center and enjoys socializing, dancing, swimming, watching wrestling, and dining out.
